Revitalization of the Casablanca Slaughterhouse: A Cultural and Economic Transformation

An Overview

Our client, the Municipality of Casablanca, sought to transform the historic Slaughterhouse Site into a modern hub supporting cultural and digital opportunities. The goal was not just to breathe new life into the historical landmark, but also to attract private sector investments and creatively stimulate urban tourism that aligned with the state’s long-term development plans.

Transform a Historic Site into a Future-Ready Cultural & Economic Landmark

Initial Findings Reveal Huge Economic Opportunities and Underutilised Potentials

Our initial market research revealed just how vastly underutilized the landmark site had been. The strategic positioning of the slaughterhouse and proximity to the city centre indicated high footfall potential post a vibrant and creative revamp.

The project also aligned with Morocco’s Vision 2030 urban innovation goals and tourism strategy, making it a strong contender for the country’s top tourism hot spots.

Solutions by Van Peak: Roadmap to Purpose-Driven Transformation

The team came together to develop a phased infrastructure design revamp timeline, along with activity mapping and financial sustainability models for the long term.

The infrastructure design included galleries, art spaces, retail kiosks, cafes, and performance stages for cultural events. The plan was comprehensive, detailed, and elaborated not only on activity schedules but also on direct and indirect job creation for the local community. We also presented a private capital mobilisation framework to attract external investment.

The Impact

Van Peak’s strategic blueprint catalyzed government and private sector momentum around the site. It positioned Casablanca as a leading city in urban innovation, while preserving cultural identity and unlocking multi-sectoral value.

The site’s development now serves as a model for urban regeneration in MENA, demonstrating the viability of heritage-based innovation hubs.
